The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against England. However, the announcement has stirred discussions as some notable names, including 2024 T20 World Cup winner Rishabh Pant, are absent from the list.

Pant Misses Out, Samson and Jurel Included

In a surprising move, wicketkeeper-batters Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel have been selected ahead of Pant. While Samson’s recent performances, especially during the South Africa series, have been commendable, Jurel’s inclusion has raised eyebrows given Pant’s established credentials.

Former India opener and renowned commentator Aakash Chopra has weighed in on this decision, expressing his surprise and concern about Pant’s omission.

Aakash Chopra Questions Pant’s Exclusion

“You picked Dhruv Jurel and didn’t pick Rishabh Pant. That’s an interesting one. It cannot happen that you are thinking Rishabh Pant is not capable of playing T20s, that he doesn’t do well in white-ball cricket. Are we going to take that call so early in somebody’s career?” said Chopra on his YouTube channel.

Chopra emphasized Pant’s value to the team, describing him as a generational talent and a player worth investing in. He speculated that Pant’s exclusion might be due to rest after a long series but noted that his place in the squad—and even in the playing XI for future ICC events—is now uncertain.

“I feel Rishabh Pant is an asset. He is a generational talent. He is a player you should invest in. He might have been rested as he has come after playing a long series. However, his name is not certain for the Champions Trophy. Even if it is, it’s not certain in the XI. So you could have kept him with the team,” Chopra added.

Chopra’s Take on Dhruv Jurel

While discussing Pant’s absence, Chopra also spoke highly of Dhruv Jurel, praising his potential and temperament. However, he pointed out that Jurel’s performances in T20 cricket have not yet matched his promise.

“I love the kid. How well he bats. Temperament is absolutely outstanding. We saw in Ranchi that the guy has the might. He was playing his first match and gave a Player of the Match performance. He played the first match of BGT (2024-25) and I am not going to go deeper into it because anyone can get out in one match,” Chopra said.

Chopra highlighted Jurel’s promising showings in practice matches and his strong debut against England in Ranchi but noted the lack of substantial performances in the shorter format so far.

“He scored runs in the side game he played before that. He has got a lot of potential and promise. However, when we see T20 cricket, the third ‘P,’ which is performance, hasn’t come yet. So you have picked him on total pure potential. He is a middle-order batter for sure but he is also going to warm the bench,” Chopra concluded.

What Lies Ahead for Team India?

The selection decisions highlight a potential shift in India’s T20I strategy as the team experiments with younger talent while keeping an eye on the future. The series against England will serve as a platform for players like Jurel to prove their mettle, but the exclusion of seasoned players like Pant will continue to be a talking point. Fans and experts alike will watch closely as the series unfolds.
